This concert celebrates nearly 250 years of American music, featuring classical works, jazz, and an exciting new piece to be premiered. The orchestra begins with John Williams' "Liberty Fanfare", originally premiered in celebration of the Centennial of the Statue of Liberty, followed by Leonard Bernstein’s “On the Town: Three Dance Episodes” combining symphonic sounds with jazz elements, following the adventures of sailors in New York City. Duke Ellington’s “A New World a-Comin”, featuring Spencer Zweifel on piano, shares Ellington’s vision of a world with “... no war, no greed, and where love is unconditional…”. The second half of the concert opens with the world premier of Julie Giroux’s “Views Panoramic”, a musical celebration of some of our planet’s most awe-inspiring natural wonders. Aaron Copland’s “Appalachian Spring” tells the story of a hopeful young couple starting a new life in rural Pennsylvania. The orchestra closes the celebration with John Phillip Sousa’s “The Stars and Stripes Forever”.
Spencer Zweifel has become a regular member of the Colorado music scene. An accomplished jazz pianist, Zweifel has performed professionally in a wide variety of genres across Colorado as well as in tours around the US. In 2021, Spencer was selected as a national finalist for the Jacksonville Jazz Festival jazz piano competition, where he placed third. In 2023, Zweifel joined the faculty of the world-class UNC jazz program where he works as an instructor of jazz piano and leader of the Funk Lab.
